TAMPA, Fla. — The Tampa chapter office of the American Red Cross sent a veteran volunteer to Los Angles on Friday to help out with offering sheltering assistance to wildfire victims.
“You're providing shelters for people that have nowhere to sleep,” Hall said. “You're giving them supplies and equipment to help them rebuild.”
Hall has been a Red Cross volunteer for 14 years and this will be his 42nd deployment. He only packed one bag for his 14-day deployment to California.
“My first few deployments I took a lot more,” he said. “I learned to get lean and mean.”
The volunteer will work 14-hour days and sleep on a cot in a shelter. Hall said he is prepared for the apocalyptic scenes he will witness in California due to his past volunteer experiences.
“I've done Hurricane Sandy. I did the Joplin tornadoes just recently. I did the Florida hurricanes,” he said. “So I'm used to it. But every time you see it on TV, it makes you want to go and start packing.”
When Hall got the call to deploy, he had less than 24 hours to pack. The longtime Red Cross volunteer said it is rewarding to help disaster victims dig out both emotionally and physically.
“You're dealing with these individuals that have that have had everything taken from them,” he said. “So that's the reward, is knowing that you're doing what little you can do as an individual to help these people when they need it the most.”
The Tampa chapter office of the American Red Cross will likely send another volunteer to California in the next couple of weeks.
