The Amish Creamery Company is in a strip mall about a block away from Madeira Beach.
They’re known for having the best sweets on the beach, a title Clint Herlein holds dear.
“With our ice cream, it’s the highest percentage of butterfat and it’s very creamy,” he said. “There’s no one on the beach that has that type of cream in their ice cream.”
Herlein has been working hard to remind people of that since he first opened the doors 19 years ago.
His ice cream shop is part of his family’s different Amish dessert and grocery businesses throughout Tampa Bay, based in Sarasota.
Like most Madeira Beach businesses, his ice cream shop got hit hard by Hurricane Helene.
“It took us about seven weeks to clean up and (we) had to put a new floor in and that was laborious,” Herlein said. “I don’t want to do that again. But we’re here.”
He’s determined to keep his business open, though right now, Herlein is running his ice cream shop with very little help.
“I’d been working seven days a week myself,” he said. “I did hire my girls back for this weekend and so I had some time off.”
He said he’s lucky if he gets one or two customers a day, but that changed somewhat recently thanks to one of his customers.
“Some lady by the name of Theresa Sandy wrote something on a Facebook,” Herlein said.
That was about two weeks ago and while things are still slow, Herlein has managed to keep a positive attitude and look at the ice cream cup as half full.
“It’s something that you live with, and with my years of experience, you just don’t worry about it, you just go on and work around it,” he said.
The Amish Creamery is open seven days a week.
Herlein said he’s hoping to hire back his team once business picks back up.
