TEXAS — Black History Month is here, and with it comes educational events, services and celebrations across Texas. Here’s a list of events near you:
Austin
Buffalo Soldiers Heritage and Outreach - Feb. 12 from 6 to 7 p.m.
Free to all ages, this event aims to teach about the Buffalo Soldiers’ lives and history. The event will be held at the John Gillum Branch Austin Public Library.
Say That Again: A Collaborative Dance Production for Black History Month - Feb. 20 through March 1.
Held at the Dougherty Arts Center, “Say That Again” is a performative dance show including hip-hop, street and contemporary dance. Tickets will cost anywhere from $20 to $60 and shows will span across a week and a half starting on Feb. 20.
4th Annual Celebrate Black Austin - Feb. 22 from 10 a.m to 5 p.m.
The 4th Annual Celebrate Black Austin showcases the history of Austin’s Black community with a career fair, a block party festival, vendors markets and even a walking tour of East Austin. The event will be free to all ages.
Black History Month Kid’s Day at the Carver - Feb. 22 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Held at the George Washington Carver Museum, this free event is filled with things for the kids to do, such as arts and crafts, a fashion show and even a tea party.
Dallas
Family Day: Black History Month - Feb. 8 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
This event is free for all ages, and held at the Skillman Southwestern Branch Library. Those who attend will be able to participate in arts and crafts and join in on the Bandan Koro Experience’s West African Drum and Percussion Workshop from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Dallas Black History Food Festival - Feb. 16 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
This food festival will be held at Lofty Spaces off Montgomery St. Tickets are free and the event is family friendly with live music and a kids zone.
A Joyful Noise: Black History Choir Performance - Feb. 22 from 2 to 3 p.m.
Free for all ages, join the South Dallas Concert Choir for a performance at the Kleberg Rylie Branch Library.
2025 “Taste of Soul” Cook-off - Feb. 22 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Featuring some of DFW’s top chefs and free for all, this cook-off includes a cash prize for winners of each category, as well as live music and entertainment. The event will be held at the Martin Luther King Jr. Recreation Center.
San Antonio
Black History Film Series: Miles of Smiles - Feb 7 from 6 to 8:30 p.m.
The San Antonio African American Community Archive & Museum is putting on this free event, screening “Miles of Smiles” at the Carver Community Cultural Center. Tickets are free but registration is required.
Black Cowboys: An American Story
Included with admission to the Witte Museum, the “Black Cowboys: An American Story” will remain open until Feb. 9. The exhibit details the lives and work of Black men, women and children who worked on ranches in Texas. You can find more details here.
Black History River Tour
This tour, hosted three times throughout the month, will be a little under two hours through the San Antonio River Walk area. You can find tickets to the tours here.
One Beat: Yoga and Drum Circle - Feb. 13 from 6 to 7 p.m.
This free yoga session, hosted by Breezy Raynae is open to all, and free to all. You can register here.
