NEW PORT RICHEY -- J.D. Baker has been a teacher for 22 years in Pasco County.

He’s currently the 9th grade graduation coach at River Ridge High School.

“You see kids that possibly give up or have failed, you give them hope that in four years they can still do it," Baker said. "And then seeing them walk across the finish line at graduation, that’s the best part."

He also coaches weight lifting, and cross country. At the beginning of this school year, Baker was coming to school each day while he was battling cancer.

“In the last year, I was diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer, skin cancer, that was growing down into my nerves in my scalp,” said Baker.

He had the cancer removed then underwent reconstructive surgery, followed by 30 days of radiation every morning. Afterwards, he would come to River Ridge High to teach and coach.

“Through all the treatment, everything he’s been through, he’s just always been there for the kids, always made that a priority,” said Kelly McPherson, interim principal.

“It was rough some days, yeah, but I didn’t miss it," Baker said. "I think it kept me going every day, so that was my challenge personally. I was like I’m not going to miss practice, I’m not going to miss work and it worked out."

Baker was able to ring the bell at Moffitt Cancer Center in September last year.

“The kids really inspired me to keep going," said Baker.

He was nominated to be featured as this week's A+ Teacher for his dedication to his students and for teaching them to never give up.
