PLANT CITY, Fla. — Fear among the immigrant community in Florida is growing as immigration policies continue to change.
It’s why one Plant City woman is hoping to ease concerns by keeping people informed about their rights.
Hand in hand, Blanca Perez is praying for the day ahead, as she prepares to spread a message of faith through red cards.
“They basically let (the community) know their rights under the U.S. Constitution that no matter what their legal status is here in the U.S., they have the right to remain silent,” she said.
But Perez is not alone. She and group of friends are making sure the immigrant community feels heard.
Perez said there’s a lot of misinformation about what rights immigrants have. So, they’re hoping to be that trusted hand.
"A lot of people are fearful," she said. "They don’t want to come out of their homes, and we’re just letting them know to have peace in the midst of the storm."
They’re handing out 200 red cards at local grocery stores and meeting people where they’re at.
Alondra Montelongo Leon said they’re helping breakdown the walls of those who may be in fear.
“It goes from like, 'I’m scared,' to, 'Oh, I’m receptive to what you’re giving me, and can you please give me more,'” said Leon.
She said there’s a back order on the red cards right now, but they can be printed out online.
The cards help anyone assert their rights and defend themselves, which Perez said is something many people don’t know or are afraid to do.
“We’re not just out here verbally saying, 'Don’t live in fear, live in faith,' but how can they activate that faith finding that godly community,” she said.
Through a conversation and a smile, they’re creating a space where everyone feels safe, regardless of immigration status.
You can access the red card on the Immigrant Legal Resource Center online.
