The boy, 10, was seriously injured but remains stable after police say he and his uncle were shot outside a home. The uncle was treated and released from the hospital.

According to authorities, the shooting happened near the 1400 block of 15th Street South just after 7 p.m. on Tuesday. Investigators believe there was a conflict between two groups on the street. At a Wednesday morning news conference, police said Jones didn't know the members of either group.

St. Pete Police Chief Anthony Holloway said Jones exited his house after hearing previous gunshots and fired a gun northward, in the direction of the gunfire he heard, striking the boy and his uncle, 40.

"It's very disturbing," Holloway said of the shooting. "And he had the nerve to just stay there (at his home) after he had two people. Detectives were able to witnesses and take Jones into custody."

Jones is facing the following charges: Two counts of attempted felony murder, delinquent in possession of a firearm and two counts of possession of a controlled substance (ecstasy and cocaine).

Holloway said Jones has had a violent past since 2020, including an attempted murder charge.
