In the heart of Ybor City is a statue that, for Alayne Unterberger, means hope.
“It grounds people into what Tampa is, because this whole community is made by immigrants,” she said.
It’s a statue honoring immigrants and a place she likes to bring people on tours of Tampa.
Unterberger works to help the immigrant community in Tampa Bay. She offers mental health courses through the Florida Institute for Community Studies.
“Immigration itself is traumatic. We’re learning more and more about that and what’s happening now is that our laws have really not changed, it’s just the policies,” she said.
These courses have been offered since 2023, but recently the topic has shifted to helping families cope with immigration policies.
With the governor signing new reforms to tackle illegal immigration, Unterberger says another layer of stress has been added, even for families here legally.
“Now is a time when we need to learn to listen and to help children reflect and guide them through this,” she said.
Multiple studies have shown that immigration can have an effect on mental health. The courses Unterberger provides focus on ensuring families don’t feel alone.
“Definitely reach out, form a community. You know, talk to your neighbors, find people you can trust,” she said to people who need help with their mental health.
With one goal in mind, she’s hoping to create a place where people feel safe. The mental health course certifications are taking place now until March and are all virtual.
