COLUMBUS, Ohio — In addition to other business, The Ohio State University Board of Trustees honored coaches, students and players with the football and spirit teams at a board meeting Wednesday.

What You Need To Know

  • The Ohio State University Board of Trustees approved the extension to Buckeyes Head Coach Ryan Day's contract

  • It also recognized national championship-winning teams at a board meeting Wednesday

  • At a meeting Monday, Day explained how the Buckeyes have adjusted to changes in college football

This comes after the Buckeyes won the 12-team College Football Playoff championship last month against Notre Dame. Last month, the spirit program also took home a national championship.

“We strive for excellence in all aspects: athletics, student learning, research and patient care,” President Walter “Ted” Carter Jr. said in an OSU press release.

At the meeting, the board also approved the extension of head coach Ryan Day’s contact to last through Jan. 31 of 2032.

Prior to winning the CFP championship, there had been calls by critics for Day to be fired after the Buckeyes lost for the fourth year in a row to their rival Michigan.

In the release, Athletic Director Ross Bjork praised the extension of Day’s contact, saying it offered “longevity, stability, [and] continuity in this ever-changing world we think is so, so important, and we’re just blessed to have Coach Day’s leadership of our football program.”

The release notes Day’s comments at an athletics board committee meeting on Monday, in which he discussed how the Buckeyes have adjusted to the changes shaking up college football.

“With all this change going on, to me it was the timeless principles and values of this university that our team displayed which allowed us to reach our goals of becoming national champions,” Day said in the release.

In that meeting, Day also noted that this semester was the fifth in a row that the team’s cumulative GPA was higher than three.
