ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — A rally was held at St. Petersburg's Dali Museum Plaza on Sunday to show support for the Ukrainian people.
Luba Dackiw is an organizer of the rally and a member of the Ukrainian National Women’s League of America. She says now is a time to keep up the support for the war-torn nation.
“We will continue to do this and we will continue other efforts to bring a light and to inform our legislatures, the president of the United States, they need to know how we feel and we need to have the support and the other nations from the European Union,” she said.
Talks between the U.S. and Russia have begun over possibly bringing the war to an end.
Some members of President Donald Trump’s cabinet have been frank in their position against the war, with National Security Advisor Mike Waltz saying: “It is unacceptable that the United States and the United States taxpayer continues to bear the burden, not only of the cost of the war in Ukraine but of the defense of, of Europe.”
Dackiw said she wants to remind the world that it was Russia who started the war.
“They need to recognize who the instigator is here, who the criminal is," she said. "Ukraine is a country that wants to be free to make their decisions to carve out their own path in the world."
Organizers said they hope that the U.S. and its European allies will continue to support Ukraine. They worry about the recent exchanges between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on how to bring the conflict to an end.
"I want the war to end but it has to be fair to Ukraine," said Sue Mannion, who attended the rally. "You cannot give away this land that was taken from them. It has to be a fair negotiation with Ukrainians. Zelenskyy has to be at the table."
