TEXAS — Reality star and entrepreneur Kim Kardashian is being sued after inaccurately labeling a New York man as a Texas death row inmate.

Kardashian, who has been an advocate for criminal justice reform whilst pursuing a law degree, was attempting to bring attention to Ivan Cantu last February. Cantu was a man from Dallas on death row who was found guilty of murdering his cousin and his cousin’s girlfriend in 2001.

Cantu had long maintained his innocence up until his execution on Feb. 28, 2024.

The lawsuit was filed in Los Angeles Superior Court on Thursday and hinges on a post Kardashian made in Feb. 2024. The post included a photo of a New York man who lives in Westchester, New York, who shares the same name as the death row inmate.

The lawsuit includes six counts, including libel, slander and invasion of privacy. Lawyers for the Westchester Cantu said their client “suffered serious emotional damage from Kim Kardashian making a libelous post about him on her Instagram page” in a statement from Sobo & Sobo Personal Injury Attorneys.

The lawsuit alleges Kardashian violated Cantu’s right to privacy and civil liberty by posting a false story about him to her millions of followers on Instagram.

Cantu’s lawyers said he was diagnosed with depression, post-traumatic stress, and social anxiety as a result of the post.

An attorney for Kardashian told NBC News the reality star made a “simple mistake.”
