TAMPA, Fla. — The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development is making changes to crack down on illegal immigrants looking to purchase a home.
Beginning May 25, they will no longer be eligible for Federal Housing Administration mortgages.
This loan program currently allows DACA recipients who provide a valid social security number and work eligibility to purchase a home.
Some real estate professionals say it’s a way to make sure lower income individuals have access to home ownership.
“It hits me a little hard because a lot of the immigrant community that I’ve worked with, we tend to lean into those FHA loans because they’re a little bit more flexible,” Sam Brown Perez, a real estate agent of six years, said.
However, she’s remaining optimistic that becoming a homeowner will still be a possibility for many.
Recently, she created a video explaining changes made by the Department of Housing and Urban Development, which remove access to FHA loans for undocumented immigrants.
As a former high school Spanish teacher, Brown Perez says education is fundamental to understand how to become a homeowner.
“I work often with first time home buyers in the immigrant community to help people start building their wealth through real estate,” she said.
Brown Perez, along with National Association of Hispanic Real Estate professionals, held an educational meeting in Tampa to talk about the changes for the immigrant community and give information that can be used to help first time home buyers.
“It’s not going to be impossible for them to buy homes there’s other options,” she said.
Brown Perez says there are options like conventional loans and GM loans, but they can be a bit more difficult to obtain.
Through her educational videos or sessions, she is hoping to help more immigrants open the doors to their forever homes.
In announcing this move, HUD Secretary Scott Turner said, “HUD is acting to protect the American dream of home ownership. American taxpayers will no longer subsidize open borders by offering home loans to those who enter our nation illegally.”
