The first-ever skatepark on Lanai opened on Saturday with a blessing ceremony and party.
Maui County officials, community members, and skateboarders gathered at the Lanai Skatepark and Youth Center in Lanai City for the celebration, which began with remarks from Maui County Department of Parks and Recreation Director Patrick McCall.
“These spaces are a testament to the County’s commitment to our keiki, our families and the bright future of this community,” McCall said, according to a news release. “More importantly, today reminds us of what we can accomplish when we work together — administration and council, government and community, departments and agencies — all united by a shared vision.”
After McCall, Lanai Councilmember Gabe Johnson, an advocate for the youth center and skatepark, spoke about how the new facility will serve as a community hub, where generations will come together, make memories, and create traditions they will pass down.
Next, Lanai resident Samson Aki sounded the pū, which was followed by a blessing by Deacon Henry Costales and Father Marcial Maglana of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary Catholic Church.
After the blessing, the party continued with free shave ice and cotton candy for attendees, and DPR provided free helmets, protective pads and skateboard rentals for keiki. Skaters of all ages took part in the Skate Jam hosted by One Love Skate, shredding on the new skatepark.
