The Hawaii Department of Transportation alerts motorists utilizing the H-1 Freeway of crews working at night at various locations beginning in April and continuing through October.
Starting in April, the two right lanes on the eastbound H-1 Freeway near Kualakai Parkway will close from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m. Monday through Thursday for sign structure work. Crews will work in this location for about one month, weather permitting.
In May, crews will move to the westbound Kamehameha Highway in Pearl City to work on signs just before the Waipahu off-ramp. A single lane will close from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m. Monday through Thursday.
The next work location will be the westbound Kamehameha Highway on the Waianae and Mililani/Wahiawa off-ramps requiring a single right lane closure, 9 p.m. to 4 a.m. Monday through Thursday. Work will continue from May through June.
From July through October, work will occur on Nimitz Highway in the Joint Base Pearl Harbor/Hickam off-ramps. A single lane in both directions will close 9 p.m. to 4 a.m. Monday through Thursday.
The work being done entails concrete footing construction, shafts being drilled, and concrete pours.
After the completion of footing and shaft work, crews will need to return to each of the above locations to install new signs with Hawaiian diacritical markings — ʻAiea, ʻEwa, Waiʻanae, Kāneʻohe, Wahiawā and Hālawa. This work will require full roadway closures to be announced at a later date. Estimated completion is Fall 2026.
HDOT urges motorists to drive with caution, be aware of traffic signs and barriers, and to plan ahead of time.
All work is weather permitting.
