GREENSBORO, N.C. — The ACC Women's Basketball Tournament is leaving the Triad, at least for the next few years.

After more than 20 years in Greensboro, the games will go to Atlanta in 2026, then Charlotte in 2027.

What You Need To Know

  • The Women’s ACC Basketball Tournament will be played in Atlanta in 2026 and Charlotte in 2027

  • The games have been played at the First Horizon Coliseum, formally the Greensboro Coliseum Complex, for 25 of the past 26 seasons

  • During their time in “Tournament Town,” attendance for the games broke records

Greensboro Sports Foundation President Richard Beard said during the tournament's time in Greensboro, it started trends followed by other college championship organizations.

“It’s meant a lot to the community — not only do we grow it into the most prominent conference championship in the country, but the country, conferences all across the country have started copying a lot of what we have done, such as school days and fan fest, which were born here in Greensboro,” Beard said.

During its long run in the Triad, the tournament set attendance records.

The title game between Duke and N.C. State had record attendance of 11,823.

“And then we had 70,000 people come and visit and enjoy the tournament, and that was the largest crowd since 2009,” Beard said. “So Greensboro always comes forward and delivers when it comes to this tournament.”

The NCAA remains a strong partner of the foundation, he said, and the door is always open for the games to return home.

The move means a break in tradition for women’s basketball fans.

The event has been in Greensboro for 25 of the past 26 seasons.
