TAVARES, Fla. — A mulch fire that began smoldering on Saturday at the Lake County Solid Waste Facility in Tavares may cause drifting smoke in the coming days, according to county officials.

The fire is expected to burn idefinitely as entities work to separate burning mulch from non-burning mulch.

“There’s nothing for the surrounding communities to worry about,” said Anthony Cuellar, Deputy Chief of Operations for Lake County Fire Rescue. “Smoke will be a nuisance, though. We will experience smoke drift as the day and week progress. So, keep your windows and doors closed. And if you have emergency respiratory issues, call 911.”

The fire comes as Lake County has experienced dry conditions recently, and the county is currently under a burn ban.

Lake County Fire Rescue expects the mulch to smolder for at least several weeks.
