State Police on Wednesday shot and killed a man who fired several rounds into the occupied State Police barracks in Malta and refused officer commands to drop the firearm, Troop G Commander Major Christopher Gilroy said.
David Levine, 69, of Malta, fired a long gun while standing outside the station in the parking lot at 2455 Route 9 at around 1:43 p.m., Gilroy said at a press conference held in Wilton.
Troopers heard the gunfire from inside the station and immediately responded to what Gilroy described as an active threat. State Police officers instructed Levine to drop the gun, and when he refused multiple commands and aimed the rifle at troopers, they fired at him, causing his death, Gilroy said, citing a preliminary State Police investigation.
There were no injuries in the incident, which Gilroy said was captured on multiple body-worn cameras. Video from the cameras was not released on Wednesday due to the ongoing investigation, Gilroy said.
Police had closed Route 9 between the State Route 67 traffic circle at Dunning Street and Saratoga Village Boulevard. Just the northbound lane remained at about 7:15 p.m. Wednesday.
The county sheriff's office also responded to the scene.
