In 2022, Gov. Ron DeSantis signed Senate Bill 1054, titled the Dorothy L. Hukill Financial Literacy Act, which requires high school students to take a financial literacy course to receive a standard high school diploma.
The legislation became a graduation requirement for students who entered high school in the 2023-2024 school year.
The push for this legislation has been going on for years, with supporters citing the need for a back-to-basics approach when it comes to educating high school students on how to financially navigate the “real world” when they get out of school.
What exactly do teens and those who are venturing out on their own need to know about managing finances and being financially literate?
