DES MOINES, Iowa — The Iowa State Fair is not just a place for fun and games, but also a place to learn a bit more about the presidential hopefuls.

This week, gun violence tops the list of topics after 31 people were killed in two separate mass shootings last weekend, one at a Walmart in El Paso, Texas, and the second in the downtown area of Dayton, Ohio.

Several candidates took the stage at a gun safety town hall at the fair to speak about how they think gun violence can be curbed in our country.

Many of them, including Sen. Kamala Harris, say gun control is one of the first steps.

“We need background checks, let's just start with that. We need background checks and we need people to be, as I’ve said, responsible in the way that they're selling guns. So it's not about everyone needs to stop selling guns. We absolutely need to have checks and balances on it and part of that is we need background checks. And so that's where I begin and end,” said Harris.

Now all of this comes just before many of our students here in Florida will start the new school year.

President Trump said this week the students in our country have nothing to fear as they head back to school, and should focus on doing well so they can go on to do big things.
