WASHINGTON, D.C. — Since Vice President Kamala Harris announced her run for the White House, her campaign says there have been 14,500 new volunteer registrations in Florida, the most of any state.

What You Need To Know

  • The Harris for President campaign says more than 14,000 people have signed up to volunteer in Florida since July 21

  • The campaign says that's the most of any state

  • Nationally, more than 170,000 volunteers have registered since President Joe Biden exited the race

"People are very excited. There's a great deal of energy around the campaign, and we have had more people volunteering to work on the campaign," said Democratic State Sen. Geraldine Thompson, a surrogate for the campaign.

Over the weekend, the Harris campaign held ‘100 Days of Action’ events across the state to mobilize voters. Hundreds rallied in golf carts for Harris in the retirement community known as The Villages.

Supporters say they are optimistic about Harris appealing to everyone from young people to older Americans.

"I think the tide is turning," said Harris for President surrogate, Attorney Mark NeJame. "I think that because of President Biden's debacle of the debate, I think that people were concerned, and they did not see him having the strength that one would need to have in order to lead our country. But, I think they're seeing the opposite. They're seeing vibrancy, usefulness, intelligence."

But, Republicans have nearly one-million more registered voters than Democrats in Florida, the now home-state of the Republican nominee, former President Donald Trump.

Governor Ron DeSantis declared on social media Tuesday, “Kamala has no chance in the Sunshine State.”

"He wants to present as if it's a self-fulfilling prophecy that Florida is red, Florida is not in play," Thompson said. "But when people have individuals that they are excited about that address their particular issues, you see people becoming engaged who have not been engaged before."

Nationally, the Harris for President campaign has had more than 170,000 new volunteer sign-ups since President Joe Biden exited the race.
