ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Ontario Beach Park continues to remain closed because of the recent heavy rain in the Rochester region.

The rains have caused an increase in E. coli bacteria developing in the water.

The Monroe County Parks Department says when the region receives heavy rainfall, the Mount Morris Dam holds back water, then releases it over time to get its reservoir back to its regular level. It helps keep floodwaters from impacting communities between the dam and Lake Ontario, but it creates perfect conditions for bacteria to form.

The parks department is continuing to monitor the situation and will report when conditions for swimming are safe again.
