ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Eight people, including a child, are being assisted by the American Red Cross after a house fire on Fairview Heights.

The Rochester Fire Department says it arrived to the fire Wednesday within minutes of the first calls of heavy smoke and fire.

It took about 30 minutes to get the fire under control.

Firefighters say everyone inside was able to get out safely due to a working smoke detector and the help of an upstairs resident.

"Smoke alarms did alert the resident in the attic apartment that there was a fire," said RDF Lt. Jeff Simpson. "The alarms activated, she turned, she saw smoke and flames, turned and exited the building. And as she was exiting the building, she was alerting all of the other occupants on their way out to get out of the building."

The upstairs of the building suffered extensive fire damage.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
