A BxM1 MTA bus was pulled back from the edge Friday morning after partially driving off an overpass in the Bronx, authorities said.
The incident happened around 8:30 a.m. on the westbound Henry Hudson Parkway overpass near Kappock Street. Officials said the bus driver swerved to avoid a double-parked car, causing the vehicle to crash into the wall of the overpass and partially go over the edge.
“We’re told by the MTA that the bus was trying to get around an illegally double-parked car, and he hit the wall and went through it. Thankfully, nobody was hurt,” said Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz, who represents much of the north Bronx where the accident occurred.
While reports from the MTA and NYPD conflicted on whether any passengers were on board, no injuries were reported.
The crash caused structural damage to the overpass wall, leaving debris scattered on Kappock Street below. Video from the scene showed the bus precariously hanging over the edge before it was safely removed around 11 a.m.
“That’s a very big bus, so even going very slowly, it can do a lot of damage,” said City Councilman Eric Dinowitz, who represents much of the same area as his father, Jeffrey Dinowitz. “I think it speaks to the importance of enforcing our parking rules because it was going around a double-parked car. And we’re seeing all over the city parking regulations not being enforced.”
Assemblyman Dinowitz said he plans to urge the Department of Transportation to inspect the overpass wall for structural integrity and ensure repairs are done as quickly as possible.
