Syracuse police on Tuesday apprehended a suspect in a shooting they said left a woman and a young boy dead inside a home.

Members of law enforcement searched overnight for a total of 12 hours across Onondaga County for 43-year-old David Huff. Police said they took him into custody near the crime scene on Roney Road around 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, acting on a citizen's tip. Huff had not yet been charged.

Officers were called to a home shortly Monday night. A 32-year-old woman and an 11-year-old boy were found dead at the home, police say. Police later identified the woman as Yeraldith Tschudy of Rochester.

The Onondaga County district attorney said Huff was in a romantic relationship with Tschudy.

Those who knew the family said the 11-year-old victim was Huff's son. North Syracuse City School District Superintendent Terry Ward said in a statement to the community that 11-year-old Jeremiah Huff was a sixth-grade student at Gillette Road Middle School in North Syracuse.

“Jeremiah was well loved by his teachers and classmates. He is described by his teachers as a friend to all and a lover of skiing and skateboarding,” Ward said.

In an interview, a neighbor who knew the victims and the suspect well said the events had left her in disbelief.

“I’m in shock," neighbor Laverne McInnis said. "I would never expect this.”

McInnis moved to the neighborhood in 2009, when she became acquainted with the family. Huff used to cut her grass.

“Great family, like I said, very helpful, very friendly,” McInnis said.

But you never know what goes on behind closed doors. When McInnis opened her door this morning, she was shocked.

“The police were everywhere, they were in the backyard and they were looking for whoever it was," she said. "We didn’t know who it was at that time, so we didn’t know what was going on.”

She then learned the helpful man who used to cut her grass had now become a suspect in a double homicide.

“Certain people you don’t expect, and they were no one I would expect," McInnis said. "My heart and prayers go out to the entire family.”

McInnis also remembered Jeremiah as an avid skateboarder.

“I would see him all the time skateboarding. Like, I literally could just see him skateboarding. It’s shocking,” McInnis said.

The events left her heartbroken for a mother and son whose lives were cut too short, too soon.

“To hear a child is no longer here definitely breaks my heart. I’ve been praying for them all morning,” McInnis said.

The North Syracuse City School District has placed a crisis response team in Gillette Road Middle School. Counselors are available from 4-6 p.m. Tuesday and over the next days as needed.

The Syracuse Police Department said this is an active and ongoing investigation. Police ask anyone with information about Huff or the shooting to call them at (315) 442-5222.
