ORLANDO -- Bill Castle's Lakeland Dreadnaughts returned to the top of the high school football mountain in the state of Florida, defeating national powerhouse St. Thomas Aquinas 33-20 in the 7A Championship at Camping World Stadium on Friday night.
Star running back Demarkcus Bowman rushed for over 200 yards and extended his Lakeland single-season record with his 36th rushing touchdown of the season. His 80-yard TD run gave the Dreadnaughts a 7-0 lead in the second quarter.
After Aquinas cut the lead to 10-7, Fenley Graham tied an FHSAA finals record with a 99-yard kickoff return and Lakeland regained a 10-point lead.
Two touchdown runs from bruising fullback/linebacker Jaharie Martin in the second half gave Lakeland an insurmountable lead.
Aquinas was led by senior QB Curt Casteel (Harvard commit), who finished with 220 passing yards, 54 rushing yards and two total touchdowns. Daniel Carter rushed for 118 yards and a score.
Castle won his seventh state championship, which ties him for second-most of any coach in FHSAA history. Lakeland's seventh state title extends what was already a Bay Area best.
