TAMPA, FL -- The Basile’s prove, the family that wrestles together, wins together.

“It was a pretty special moment,” Jesuit junior Ethan Basile said.

The moment? Ethan Basile winning a state championship. And the first person he shared it with, his dad and coach.

“To see him go those couple of years and not achieve his goal and then finally happen, that was awesome,” Jesuit wrestling head coach Sal Basile said.

Wrestling’s ruled Ethan’s world since the Jesuit junior was five and his dad coached at Springstead High School.

“I always remember my dad yelling a lot in there and it was really intense," Ethan said. "I would always watch the high school practice and it was like super intense and then our practice was a lot easier and we played games, so I thought that as fun.”

Wrestling didn’t come easily to Ethan.

“I was really bad up until sixth grade, like I lost all my matches," he said. "But I just stuck with it and then in like sixth grade is when I having a lot of success in an out of the state.”

The struggles made the journey to the podium that much sweeter.

“I always draw back to like to how bad I was when I was little," Ethan said. "It shows that I can accomplish anything I want.”

Like winning a state championship. And a national championship. Soon after Ethan claimed his first state title, he won a national crown. But it was that state title that solidified a special memory for father and son.

“I’ve coached a lot of state champs, a lot of multiple time state champs and it’s always, it’s the reason why you coach," Sal said. "You want to see kids develop into champions. But again, when it’s your own kid, it magnifies it for sure.”

It magnifies the moment.

“As soon as I took him down, I knew that was it," Ethan said. "Hugging my dad, that was pretty awesome.”

“You don’t get too many moments in life like that, you know," Sal said. "It’s a good one.”
