TAMPA, FL -- You never know who is going to show up at a Berkeley Prep practice.
Nicholas Petit-Frere, one of the top high school prospects last year now at Ohio State, stopped by his alma mater to give back.
“He was a hero around here, so we’re glad to have him,” Berkeley Prep head coach Dominick Ciao said.
Petit-Friere was the quiet leader, the humble star, kind of like rising senior Jaylen Harrell. Alabama, Georgia, Florida State have all made offers because of what this linebacker would bring to their team.
“Tenacious player, you know, just plays hard , motor runs 100 mile an hour,” Ciao said, “and he wants to make every play and a fierce competitor. And a great young man.”
Harrell is a student of the game. He was raised around the game. His father James Harrell, the former Jesuit head coach and Plant defensive coordinator hooked him at an early age.
“When I was in the sixth, seventh grade maybe, I was at the Plant-Armwood game,” Harrell recalled. “I think they won by like a blocked field goal or something crazy like that. I just remember that.”
Harrell gets a lot from his dad.
“Knowledge and not just football, but like, on and off the field, like character and stuff like that,” Harrell said.
He also looks just like his dad.
“Yeah, I get that a lot,” he said.
But mom doesn’t get left out. Harrell’s got a quality directly attributed to his mom Aria.
“As humble as can be and has been a great leader for us,” Ciao said. “Jaylen does have a lot of insight and plays the game fast and hard. I’m sure that’s from part of it being the son of a coach, but I think his mom’s tougher than anyone.”
Jaylen’s got a big season coming up. He has an important college decision to make too. But his focus for now is his Berkeley Prep teammates.
“This recruiting thing, you know, if you get one you’re fortunate,” Ciao said. “I think he understands that. He’s got a chance of a lifetime to have your education paid and hopefully, he’s fortunate to have a few choices and pick the right spot.”
“Looking forward to a great season,” Harrell said. “Our goal is to win state, so we’re getting after it in the spring right now, we’ll get after it in the summer, stuff like that. We’re just getting better every day.”
