SEFFNER, Fla. - Seffner Christian’s Mike Trigg Jr. has a passion for two sports – football and basketball.

The rising junior’s talents have him on the college recruiting radar – in both sports. And there is one school who is willing to let him attempt to play football AND basketball – USF.

Trigg had a coming out party in March at the FHSAA state basketball tournament. He scored 31 points in the 4A Final. This led to the USF men’s basketball offer.

“I was pretty excited. That was my first basketball offer,” said Trigg. “And I was shocked that they were going to offer me.”

Less than two months later, Trigg added the Bulls football offer. A dream come true for the kid from Seffner.

“I remember telling my dad and he was just ecstatic about it. But he told me I have to keep working,” said Trigg.

Trigg is still a long way from any college decision. He wouldn’t have an opportunity to sign his letter of intent until the fall 2020 – when he could sign for a basketball scholarship. A football letter would need to be signed either December 2020 or February 2021. Trigg’s goals are to not only play professional sports; he wants to take over the family business.

“I want to do culinary because my dad owns a barbecue restaurant,” Trigg said.

His dad, Mike Sr., and his family own Konan’s BBQ in Tampa. It’s a true family affair for the Trigg family. Grandpa – John Trigg Sr. - is the pitmaster.  And grandma – Ms. Brenda – is turning our classics like Sweet Potato Pie, Lemon Pound Cake, and Bread Pudding.

The family atmosphere is driven home with pictures of Mike, his older brother and twins sisters playing college sports– all hanging up for customers to see…thanks to one proud mom.

“My kids are my life. I love traveling to the games. I am their number one supporter,” said Mike’s mom, Tywanca Trigg

And then there’s dad, who does just about everything; from running the business to perfecting the food he grew up on.

“My mom had me and my brothers at a very young age. So, we never had money to get gifts. But we always had great food,” said Trigg Sr. “And it always meant so much to us on birthdays when we could have that great dinner of soul food.”

It’s that type of mentality the Triggs are instilling into their youngest child. And at Konan’s BBQ, Mike Jr. has had to work his way up the food chain.

“Ever since I was young I would work here. I used to work the cash register because I was little,” said Trigg Jr. with a smile. “Now I move wood, and even get on the grill sometimes.”

While his family will support his college choice, both mom and dad wouldn’t mind seeing their son stay close to home at USF – just like their close family friend – Bulls all-time leading receiver and Jefferson alum Andre Davis.

“I’d love that. We would love that,” said Trigg Sr. “And if Mike wants to follow in his footsteps then we would welcome that.”

And if Trigg did stay close to home he would never have to worry about finding a good meal.
