Orlando City fell further out of the MLS playoff picture and face the MLS All-Star Break on a down note following a 4-1 loss to the New England Revolution at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Mass.

  • Orlando City gave up goals in the first five minutes of both halves and fell 4-1 to New England
  • The Lions fell seven points back of the final playoff spot thanks to wins by the teams they are chasing for that spot
  • MLS will now take its All-Star Break with the MLS All-Star Game taking place Wednesday at Exploria Stadium

What made matters worse was how quickly things fell apart for the Lions.

New England scored its first goal in the third minute on a goal from newly acquired designated player Gustavo Bou. The Revolution, unbeaten in their past 11 matches, were able to withstand some pressure from the Lions throughout the first half. But Orlando City never broke through.

The defense cracked open in the second half. A little more than a minute after play resumed, Cristian Penilla ran past the defense and scored to make it a 2-0 deficit. Carles Gil scored the first penalty kick Orlando City has given up in MLS play. Diego Fagundez capped off the scoring in the 75th minute.

Tesho Akindele scored a few minutes later to get Orlando City on the board, but the damage was done.

The Lions suffered a double defeat as the teams they are chasing for the final spot in the Eastern Conference playoffs all won on Saturday before the league takes its All-Star Break in Orlando. Orlando City is seven points back of the final playoff spot now.

Orlando City will resume action on August 3 against FC Dallas at Exploria Stadium.
