TAMPA, Fla. - You might recognize the voice.
The voice on the TV, not the voice trying to sing a song.
Anddrikk Frazier leaves the singing to his daughter.
The former Tampa Prep star basketball player takes no credit for his daughter Aja’s singing talent.
"She’s a lot like her mother," Anddrikk said.
Both Fraziers have starred in different roles at Tampa Prep. Anddrikk shined brightly for the Terrapins boys basketball team in the early nineties. Aja currently shines in various music and theater productions.
Put Anddrikk on a basketball court and he’s at home. Put Aja on a stage or in front of a microphone and she’s at home.
"I think we’re both expressive but we do it in different manners," Anddrikk said.
There are similarities between their two crafts. Both take big commitments and lots of practice.
"I can remember being a kid and spending a lot of my time in the driveway working on ball handling or going to the park playing," Anddrikk said. "And for the longest time, 11, 12, 13 years old, she would just lock herself in her room and we had no idea what she was doing.
"We found out all that time she had been writing and composing."
Music means everything to Aja. It’s more than a hobby. It’s her future.
"There’s so much about it," Aja said. "The fact that it can take so many different forms. Just that it’s lasted so long throughout history and that it’s still here and still prevalent, it just speaks to me."
And Aja’s music speaks to others. She released an original song last year titled Girls Just Want To Go Home.
She’s got a big fan in her dad. As one of Spectrum Sports basketball broadcast voices, Anddrikk knows how to reach an audience with his knowledge and words. Aja’s looking forward to doing the same, but on a different platform.
"To just have people singing my lyrics to me while I’m performing, that’s the dream," Aja said.
And it’s a dream her dad fully supports.
"It’s a passion. And when you find out your child has a passion for something that’s something that’s healthy, you want to help feed that passion," Anddrikk said. "She’s found her own niche. And she’s being her own person and she’s comfortable in it.
"And that makes me proud, really proud."
