ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - When sports are back in action, there will still be concerns over the coronavirus.

But one local company may have a solution for safely getting fans back in the seats.

Owner of Vetted Security Systems, Ryan Barnett says this technology could be a game-changer for resuming sports.

"This is a temperature screening that detects elevated temperature levels on individuals coming into a venue, facility, business — whatever the case may be,” Barnett explained.

"If they did have an elevated temperature emitted from their skin, it would automatically alert the security officer at the front of that venue and trigger a secondary test protocol.”

Whether it's fans or players who need to be screened, it’s a quick process.

"It allows you to scan 15 to 25 people at a time coming in at a pretty rapid pace. Rather than having to do an individual thermometer take of each, individual person,” Barnett said.

We checked the accuracy and the thermal reading temperature was the same when matched against a thermometer.

Barnett says the accuracy is within one-half a degree.

"We’ve deployed about 30 of them throughout south Florida and we’ve had nothing but the highest regards from customers as far as people who had tested positive. They double-checked against a digital thermometer and those being a spot on.”

Barnett feels these thermal scanners could benefit team operations on every level.

"The fans are obviously the biggest volume of the number but you’ve got to think of the number of other people that go into putting that sporting event together,” Barnett said. "In an NBA game you have 10 guys sitting on the court right there in front of you, but you have a couple thousand people who are putting that on, making that sporting event happen that day.”

It may be a while before sports resume as normal.

But in the meantime, this technology should provide a layer of safety.

"I think we’re all anxious to get back to normal life and sporting adds a layer of normalcy,” Barnett said. "Any measure that would get our Rays back on the field, and our fans back in the stands, I’m all for it.”
