TAMPA — When you meet the Crook brothers, you may think you’re seeing double.
“Obviously we’re identical twins, we get it a lot that we’re the most identical twins people have ever seen,” said Jack Crook, the older twin.
Born just three seconds apart, Jack and Tom Crook are about as identical as it gets.
“We are basically the same,” Jack said.
Tom added, “We like the same stuff, same food, same movies.”
Their similarities aren’t only in their interests and sense of humor, but also in their work ethic and dedication. It’s evident in what they’ve accomplished on Jesuit High School’s wrestling team.
"You get one person with the mindset that they have, and the drive that they have, it’s a really special thing,” said head coach Sal Bastile. "And you have two of them, and they constantly feed off of each other.”
It’s been that way since they started wrestling at 9-years-old.
"It’s one-on-one, it’s just you out there on the mat and it’s a fight,” said Jack.
Tom also loves the individual competition.
"It’s an individual sport so what you put in, you get out,” he said. “If you don’t like the way you wrestled, you go back in and you fix it.”
That mindset has propelled them to the top 15 in national rankings. They’re also both undefeated this season.
"Those two are just continuing to climb every day,” Bastile said. "I think that’s one of the things that separates them from a lot of kids. They’re nowhere close to the top."
Tom is a two-time state champ and Jack had a top-three finish the past two years.
"You only see your hand getting raised at states, but a lot of it was my brother pushing me every day when I didn’t want to wrestle,” Tom said.
Since they’re in different weight classes, they never compete against one another, but there’s still some sibling rivalry.
"A lot of my time is spent trying to prove Jack wrong, if he says I can’t do something — he’s my hero kind of thing,” Tom said.
Jack is also motivated by his twin brother.
“I've been chasing him,” he said. “When I look at him, I see the better version of myself.”
Through the wins and losses, the Crook twins are in it together.
