TAMPA, Fla. – USF baseball is back.
Daniel Cantu feels the Bulls have something to prove.
“Oh man, so excited to get rolling,” Cantu said. “You can’t even describe the feeling.”
After last season’s historic finish, USF wants to show they’re the real deal.
“I think we’re very close. This program is definitely on the rise and we got the right guys here to put us on the map,” Cantu said.
USF pulled off upsets to win the school’s first AAC tournament. They beat No.14 Florida, Miami and South Alabama to win the Bull's first regional title.
“Going through that last year, getting that experience, it’s just like a burning fire inside that just makes me want to go farther, and just show up every day and give it all you’ve got.”
Billy Mohl has served as the Bull's head coach since 2017, his philosophy remains the same.
“Obviously the consistency part of it, of any program is you want to build the consistency, so that’s what I’ve tasked the guys with this year, you look at last year’s team and we’re fluttering around 500 for most of the year then we finally put it all together with a lot of young talent, but now the key is coming out and playing consistently every night,” Mohl said.
The goal is Omaha and Mohl feels he has the roster to get there. USF returns seven starters and a strong pitching staff.
“The goal is to get to Omah. Every year the goal is to get to Omaha. That’s what these guys have set their sights on and that’s what we work towards every day,” Mohl said.
Cantu says this group is ready to take care of unfinished business.
“Just knowing that we were so close, but we know that we got it in us and this group is definitely the group that can get it done.”
