TAMPA, FL - Alonso flag football is really good. A big reason why is their quarterback.
Mieke Rowe is in her first year as the Raven’s starter. The junior is well aware of the standard that comes with leading the two-time state champs.
“It’s not so much pressure, it’s almost like I get to be that person,” said Rowe, who is also one of the team’s captains. “It’s a privilege, not pressure.”
Rowe is under the guidance of head coach Matt Hernandez, who has seen her grow into a leader for Alonso.
“With the quarterback even though everything isn’t on you, it feels that way,” said Hernandez. “Just knowing what she was kind of able to overcome and build to where she is at now is the most incredible part of her journey.”
Rowe has become a machine on the field with over 20 passing touchdowns and barely a blemish. The receivers she’s connecting with each game admire her work ethic.
“She’s always willing to ask questions and ask players questions,” said senior receiver, and captain, Isansa Bongo. “She wants to understand their mentality and the coach’s mentality.”
Now it’s about putting all the pieces together to go after that ultimate prize.
“Our end goal is to be able to compete in the state championship, which is pretty big for us,” said Rowe.
If Alonso can capture another flag football title…Mieke Rowe will etch her name into Ravens QB history.
