The city of Oldsmar’s Sports Complex is getting ready for a big weekend.

"This is a signature facility," says city of Oldsmar director of leisure services Chip Potts. "It brings people not only from Oldsmar together to have pride in hosting an event like this, but were recognized around the region, the state and the country for what we have to offer for this sport and our community."

For four years, this BMX track has been closed, undergoing nearly $3 million in renovations. On Friday, it will reopen and host a BMX Supercross event, featuring some of the sports top riders from around the globe.

"We have an eight-meter hill here and we are one of six public tracks in the country that host supercross events from an eight-meter hill."

Of all the sports this complex hosts, how does a city right here in the Bay Area jump into a sport like BMX and build one of the premier tracks in the country?

"So, back when the track was originally built, there was a very strong interest of BMX within the city and within the community," says Potts. "They looked at an opportunity, they took that opportunity and then really expanded upon it to really go the distance and really build something that the city could be proud of. It would be something that would be a signature, not only for Oldsmar, but for the Tampa Bay Area."

Josh McClean moved to the Bay Area from Australia two-and-a-half years ago to take advantage of this track and the sport here in the states.

"I’ve been doing this for 18 years. I’m 24 now. I started when I was six," says McClean.

"This is a great facility, can’t wait for it to open. You know once it opens, I get to do some more races overseas this year, it’s going to be great to train here."

Currently, Josh is the No. 1 ranked rider on the USA BMX series and one of many who will be competing in Oldsmar this weekend.

The bikes during a race will reach speeds up to 40 miles-per-hour, in races that last just 30 seconds.

The great thing about this sport is that it has something for everybody.

"BMX is a very inclusive sport, it’s a very family oriented sport," says Potts. "It’s not unusual to see families come and compete and ride together, even the little guys who are on the strider bikes that don’t even have pedals. They are some of the cutest ones you can see."
