ORLANDO, Fla. — Former USF quarterback Timmy McClain, who starred at Sanford Seminole High School, is transferring to UCF, he announced on Twitter on Friday.

His decision to enter the transfer portal came just hours after USF Coach Jeff Scott named Baylor transfer Gerry Bohannon the Bulls’ starter for this season earlier in the week.

Since McClain’s decision to transfer came so late in the season, he likely will be ineligible to play this fall because the transfer portal closed May 1 — unless the NCAA grants him a waiver.

UCF has three quarterbacks on the roster this season — Mikey Keene, a true sophomore from Chandler, Ariz., who took over as the starter early last season after Dillon Gabiel was injured; Mississippi  transfer John Rhys Plumlee, a senior who also plays baseball; and freshman Thomas Castellanos out of Waycross, Ga. Fort Lauderdale Cardinal Gibbons quarterback Dylan Rizk also has made a nonbinding oral commitment to the Knights for the 2023 recruiting class.

Knights coach Gus Malzahn has not yet announced the starting quarterback for the upcoming season, which starts Sept. 1 against South Carolina State.

In nine games for the Bulls as a true freshman last season, McClain completed 55.3% of his passes for 1,888 yards, five touchdowns and seven interceptions and carried the ball for a net 238 yards and four touchdowns.

USF has been UCF’s War on I-4 rival, especially since entering the American Athletic Conference. The Knights will join the Big 12 in the 2023-24 athletic season.
