PASCO COUNTY, Fla. — It's not very often you hear of a girl's high school basketball player netting 2,000 career points before playing at the college level, but Anclote High School senior Bre'Anna Ortega did.

What You Need To Know

  • Bre’Anna Ortega attends Anclote high

  • She hit a personal goal of 2,000 points

  • She averages 26 points a game

Bre’Anna grew up on a basketball court. The oldest of four and the only girl, she said she was always around basketball players, especially since she also played the sport.

“I started playing when I was about six or seven years old,” she told Spectrum Sports 360’s Katya Guillaume, “and then he kind of introduced me because I started playing at the YMCA and then I just kind of fell in love with it there.”

She’s been playing ever since, but she’ll tell you, her journey playing basketball hasn’t been easy.

She said, “This year, I got kicked off my AAU team because I wasn’t producing how they wanted me to and one of the coaches told me that I would never make it in D1, D2, maybe a D3 school so she really made it seem like I couldn’t do whatever I put my mind to so I really took that and used it at motivation.”

In January, Bre’Anna did something no one has ever done at Anclote High School. She scored her 2,000th career point. “I was actually tracking it to see if I would be able to hit it but I was really excited,” she said. “I was really happy and my support, my teammates, my dad, my coach, it was amazing.”

Even more amazing for her father, Eric Ortega, who is also her coach. Ortega said, “It’s huge, it really is. 1,000 points as a junior, it hasn’t been done here. 2,000 points haven’t been done here. With it being my daughter, like I said, it makes me really proud. It brings tears to my eyes right now because I know the work that she’s put into it. I know how much work and sacrifice she’s put into it.”

Ortega won’t put his emotions on center stage around his team, he still has to play tough guy on the court “Yes I’m tough on her because it’s my daughter,” he said, “I can kinda get away with it but I’m tough on all of them but more for her because I know she really wants to do this. I know this is her dream. I know that she’s passionate about it and I know that she can take it.”

Bre’Anna leads her team in points per game, averaging just under 26.

She said she’s accomplished more than she ever imagined as a high school athlete and now she has her eyes set on the next chapter. “I think just go and play college ball and have that same type of effect, you know,” she said. “Like still make a name for me and make sure that people know who I am, outside of high school ball.”
