What You Need To Know

  • The USF football spring game was held at Corbett Stadium for first time since 2019

  • It was the debut of new head coach Alex Golesh

  • Three players are vying for the starting quarterback position

USF fans got their first glimpse of head coach Alex Golesh in action Friday night, a coach who brought a fresh perspective and enthusiasm to the team.

However, also as important that night was the uncertainty of the starting quarterback position…the coaching staff has yet to name a definitive starter.

During the off-season, USF  added Coastal Carolina transfer, Bryce Archie, who coach Golesh recruited out of high school…still trying to find his voice here in South Florida.

Archie told the media after the game, “My game, I will definitely say keeping my poise and actually becoming a vocal leader, not just leading by example. Learning from Gerry, he’s very much a Vocal leader and actually getting the guys in the locker room to believe and trust in what me and Byrum and all the quarterback hgave to pffer even if it’s not Gerry.”

Competition for the starting spot continues with redshirt freshman Byrum Brown, who took over for junior transfer Gerry Bohannon last season who left due to a season-ending shoulder injury.

Brown said, “At the end of the day, just trying to be the best Byrum I can be. Best person, best quarterback I can be so wherever that takes me and whatever the cpaches decide that’s their decision.”

Bohannon who did not see the field in this spring game is still recovering from a shoulder injury.

Coach Golesh said he’s excited about when he’ll be able to get back in the mix.

“They are all really athletic which really helps," He said. "It helps extend drives and those guys who are athletic can run. Like Byrum has grown so exponentially as a thrower, I don’t know I’m really excited for that competition at fall camp.”

Regardless of the questions still looming around, the game was a success and fans were thrilled to see their beloved Bulls take the field once again at Corbett Stadium.
