TAMPA, Fla. — After an offseason consisting of mostly voluntary workouts, the entire roster of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers was required to report Tuesday morning to the team’s mandatory three-day minicamp.
As Tampa Bay gears up for the 2023 NFL season, there are many storylines to keep an eye on during minicamp that will be crucial for the team's success moving forward.
One of the biggest questions we’ve had this offseason is the status of linebacker Devin White.
Back in April, White made his intentions clear that he would like a trade from Tampa Bay. That conversation took a back seat — for now.
In uniform and hoodie, no helmet, White took the field but had little to no participation on Day 1 of minicamp.
Head Coach Todd Bowles told the media Tuesday, “It’s not a hold-in, we like to see where he is physically, so we don’t feel like we need to put him out here right now til we test him and do everything. So, two or three days of minicamps is not gonna help him at all.”
White was not made available to the media. He hasn’t spoken on the trade.
Coach Bowles was questioned about White’s lack of participation.
“We’ll run tests and do all the lifting and running stuff inside and he’ll be ready for training camp," he said.
On the offensive side of the ball, the competition is heating up between Baker Mayfield and Kyle Trask for the starting quarterback spot.
Every snap counts right now as they aim to prove their worth to the coaching staff and teammates.
“I feel comfortable with where I’m at right now," Mayfield said. "It’s about making sure that my comfortability resonates with everybody else, so that’s the quarterback’s job is to get everybody on the same page and make sure that we breathe that confidence throughout the team. And so I feel good with where I’m at right now, but there’s obviously always room to improve.”
Trask said, “Just with the reps, your brain is getting more wired every single day with the concepts and where your eyes need to be. The progress is coming along little by little every day, and I’m feeling very comfortable just grabbing the gist of the offense.”
As the mandatory minicamp continues, the Buccaneers will also focus on fine-tuning their skills, building team chemistry, and making progress toward their ultimate goal — a successful 2023 season.
