TARPON SPRINGS, Fla. — Proving you’re never too old to learn new things, Clarice Taylor got house painting tips.

What You Need To Know

  • Wives and girlfriends of the Valspar Championship golfers helped paint a Habitat for Humanity home

  • Clarice Taylor is a first time home owner. The single mother of a daughter is also raising her niece

  • Clarice was joined by the Valspar significant others to paint the exterior of her home

And not just any house, her house.

“It’s all about learning,” she said.

Clarice has learned a lot through Habitat for Humanity, the organization that helped her purchase her first home. This single mother who is raising her daughter and her niece has had a hand in the building process. And because of that, she appreciates it a little more.

“I swept on the inside and I was like, ‘I swept my house,’” Clarice said. “So, it’s just the little things, the little things that make it so overwhelming.”

Clarice felt overwhelmed with the help she received this week. Wives and girlfriends of the PGA golfers participating in the Valspar Championship leant a hand. They grabbed paint brushes and went to work. Living so much of their lives on the road, they appreciate the comforts of home.

“I know that these women are looking forward to having their own space, their own home that they actually get to sit back and relax in,” said Casey Sloan, wife of PGA Tour golfer Roger Sloan.

With its hand up, not hand out approach, that’s what Habitat for Humanity does. It puts people on the path to home ownership. And it unites people from all different walks of life. Volunteers, like the PGA Tour wives and girlfriends, work alongside the homeowners to help make a dream come true.

“They help to construct their house, so that pride that’s instilled through home ownership really takes off once the house starts,” said Mike Sutton, CEO of Habitat for Humanity of Pinellas and West Pasco Counties.

Clarice drives by her property at least twice a day to check on the progress. Each time, she’s amazed. But the sight of her home with paint on the exterior filled her with all the feels.

“At first I thought getting the grass was real, but seeing the paint is definitely, it definitely does something to my heart,” Clarice said.
