ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Lauryn Burgess just needs to hear the words, set…go, and she knows exactly what to do.

She has her spikes firmly planted in the sport of track. And at a young age, has already left an indelible mark.

  •  Lauryn helped Admiral Farragut take the overall 1A girls state title.

In only her freshman season, Lauryn established herself as one of the top track stars in the state.

“I’ve tried every sport there is and then there is just something about track that really just stuck with me,” she said.

Her commitment to track has resulted in gold medals. Lauryn won the 400 hurdles at the Class 1A state championships.

“Her heart, her dedication, her loyalty to the training, her love and compassion for the sport, she’s a very unique person,” Admiral Farragut Arron Prather said.

She just finds ways to win. Lauryn and her teammates also took home the overall state title. It came down to the final event, the 4x400 relay. Admiral Farragut was in second place heading into that event. They needed an all out effort from everyone. And that’s exactly what they got.

“It was very surprising,” Lauryn said. “It was a lot of odds against us and it was just fight to the finish.”

Winning a state championship has made Lauryn hungry for another. And it’s kept her on track toward the ultimate goal - the Olympics. That’s where she’d like to compete one day.

“At first, I started running track as a way to express myself and then shortly I fell in love with running,” she said.
