TAMPA, Fla. — The Westchase Colts had to turn in their football jerseys, but they got something better in return: T-shirts commemorating their status as Super Bowl champs.
The Westchase 12-and-under and 13-and-under teams each won Pop Warner championships.
“Made it good for these kids to see the hard work that they’ve put in and really achieve the goal after it's all done,” 12U head coach Dewey Paxon said.
The Colts 12-year-old team defeated the Hartford Hurricanes 33-13 to win their title. The 13-and-under team took down the Oceanside Warriors from California 22-8 to become the champs.
Players say hundreds of hours of practice, sacrifice and dedication paid off in a big way.
“We kinda put in work all season to get to this point,” 13U quarterback Aidan Alexander said. “And we set a goal since day one and we achieved it.”
The older Colts players will be attending high schools next year all over Tampa Bay. Some area schools will be getting kids who know what it takes to win championships.
“These kids, you can look at them, they’re ready to play high school football,” Westchase president/13U head coach Chuck McLeod said. “And they’re going all over. They’re going to Calvary Christian, CCC, Jesuit, Berkeley, Alonso, Sickles. So they’re going all over the place.”
Since joining the Pop Warner league in 2017, the Westchase Colts have now won four championships. And each year, their enrollment goes up.
“The best memories of your life," Paxon said. "You know, being a kid playing football. They will always remember it.”
