ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — When you see the Northeast High girls basketball team in action on the court, you’ll also see the head coach Karesha Nash in action courtside.
And then when you see the Vikings boys basketball team in action, you’ll notice something familiar on their bench. Head coach Jason Murray sounds a lot like Coach Nash. That’s because they’re brother and sister.
This is the first year the siblings have coached on the same campus. Murray has coached the varsity boys the past four years, while Nash is wrapping up her inaugural season as the girls varsity coach.
“We hear a lot of times from our players, ‘You act like Coach KK, you sound like Coach J,’” Murray said. “We’re the same.”
Both have basketball in their blood. They grew up around the game. Nash played high school ball at Lakewood, while Coach Murray played at Hollins High. They’ve coached together at the youth level for years before venturing into high school basketball.
“I always loved basketball, ever since I was in high school,” Nash said. “And I’ve always loved kids, which is the most important thing. I’ve always loved kids so when I saw that he was coaching a group of kids, I was like, why not?”
Nash holds the distinction as the older sister by six years. She’s also a veteran. She served in the Marines for four years. And Murray looks up to his big sis for advice. But they feed off of each other when it comes to basketball.
“He started first, so he’s been doing it a little bit longer, so just taking that advice from him,” Nash said. “I’m like, ‘Hey bro, what about this?’ Because I know some of this stuff he’s already seen and has already experienced. So that’s what I kinda draw from him.”
“Only she’s going to understand because she knows where I came from, where I’m trying to go,” Murray said. “So it’s easier to talk to her to get it right because I know she’s going to tell me the right thing.”
