FLAGLER COUNTY, Fla. — Flagler County Sheriff Rick Staly says one pilot has died after a small plane crashed near the Volusia County line overnight.

At a conference Saturday morning, Staly said a cessna caravan disappeared from radar around 8 p.m. Friday night. The plane was reported missing after it lost contact with Palatka Municipal Airport and did not arrive as scheduled. The wreckage was found after midnight.

Flagler Sheriff's deputies searched along a densely wooded area in the area of State Road 11 in Bunnell with the assistance of Volusia County Sheriff's Office. The plane was located near the Volusia County line, officials said.

Staly says there was not a huge fireball or explosion, and that the plane appeared to nosedive when it crashed.

"It does not look like there was much of a glide path when it impacted, it was more of a straight down impact," he said.

Staly said the plane was going to be used for some upcoming skydiving trips.

The cause of the crash is currently under investigation by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).
