ORLANDO, Fla. — The temple doors have closed forever on Poseidon’s Fury, one of the opening-day attractions at Universal Islands of Adventure.
The walk-through attraction, which mixed live-action storytelling with special effects, had its final round of tours on Tuesday.
Part of the Lost Continent area of the park, Poseidon’s Fury featured an original story that took visitors on a tour through the ruins of Poseidon’s Temple before putting them in the middle of a battle between Poseidon and his nemesis, Lord Darkennon.
Before venturing inside the temple, visitors would pass through an awe-inspiring entrance, which was highlighted by a fallen stone statue of Poseidon, with the head on one side and the arm holding his trident on the other.
Once inside the temple, visitors would meet a young, bumbling archaeological assistant with the Global Discovery Group named Taylor, who agreed to lead the tour.
As visitors traveled deeper into the temple, led by Taylor from chamber to chamber, they would encounter various special effects, including lasers, projections and fire. Before reaching the final chamber, visitors would travel through an impressive water tunnel.
The finale included a climatic battle between Poseidon and Lord Darkennon, with more fire and water effects used to accentuate the story.
When the attraction opened in May 1999, Poseidon was actually the villain of the story instead of the hero. The tour was also led by a man known as “The Keeper,” instead of Taylor. The story was changed a couple years after the attraction’s debut into the version that existed at the time of its closure.
Prior to its permanent closure, Poseidon’s Fury underwent a lengthy refurbishment, which saw the temple’s facade repainted and some of the special effects updated.
It was the last remaining attraction in the Lost Continent after the Eighth Voyage of Sindbad stunt show closed in 2018.
Universal hasn’t said what will replace Poseidon’s Fury or what it has planned for that area of the park. In a statement released in April, Universal said that it is preparing for “exciting new experiences.”
