TAMPA, Fla. — The art of one of Venezuela's most revered artists, Oswaldo Vigas, can now be enjoyed in a new exhibition at Tampa Museum of Art.
"Oswaldo Vigas: Transformations" will be on display at the museum until May 27. Here's what you need to know:
- Vigas was working as a physician when he began to garner major attention for his series of “Bruja Infante,” or "Infant Witch," based on a pre-Columbian fertility goddess
- The self-taught painter left his pediatrics practice to pursue art full-time and studied in Paris
- Vigas has a special connection to Tampa — his son went to college at the University of Tampa.
- The show spans about 40 years, from the 1940s to the late 1970s, and shows the artist’s evolution in “abstract figuration.”
- Vigas died in 2014 in Caracas, Venezuela
