The tropical system in the Gulf of Mexico will continue to contribute to high rain chances Friday. It will start moving south and away during the afternoon. Deep moisture will remain overhead though.

Most of us will see showers and thunderstorms Friday afternoon with highs in the mid to upper 80s.

Some storms could bring gusty winds and heavy rain. Humidity will stay high.

1. Tropical depression forms in Gulf, no watches issued
The Atlantic hurricane season begins today, and the disturbance we’ve been tracking in the Gulf of Mexico has been upgraded to Tropical Depression Two. 

2. Demonstrators tell Florida lawmakers immigrants are not the problem
People in Central Florida and the Tampa Bay area on Thursday protested CS/SB 1718, which was signed into law by Gov. Ron DeSantis on May 10. 

3. Days before default deadline, House passes bill to raise debt limit
With just days before a June 5 default deadline – the date that Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen says her agency will no longer be able to cover the country’s bills – time is of the essence to get the bill to the Senate.

4. Spirit Airlines network issue delays travel across the country
Spirit Airlines, in a statement to Spectrum News just before 10:30 a.m. CDT Thursday, said a network issue that was causing delays across the country has been resolved and it was working its way back to normal operations.

5. U.S. applications for unemployment benefits tick up slightly as labor market remains healthy
U.S. applications for jobless claims were 232,000 for the week ending May 27, an increase of just 2,000 from the previous week.

6. Police: 3 residents of partially collapsed Iowa building still unaccounted for
Three residents of an Iowa apartment building that partially collapsed on Sunday are still unaccounted for, police said Thursday, as city officials responded to questions about who might be responsible.

7. Florida Politics: Gov. DeSantis signs bill eliminating Enterprise Florida
Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a bill (HB 5) late Wednesday to rearrange Florida’s economic development programs, reverting the Department of Economic Opportunity back to its old name as the Department of Commerce and shuttering Enterprise Florida, the public-private business development group.

8. Teachers at Wimauma Elementary School share the need for garden space
The organization Leadership Hillsborough helped to create a garden for Wimauma Elementary School, a space that they could use for reading and connecting with teachers.

  • RAYS UP: The Tampa Bay Rays will play the Boston Red Sox tomorrow night. First pitch will be at 7:10 p.m. at Fenway Park.
  • TRAFFIC ALERT: The eastbound lanes on East Palm Avenue are closed between North Jefferson Street and North Central Avenue as the Tampa Water Department performs maintenance on the water distribution system. There will be barricades and signs in the area to help reroute traffic. The work is expected to be completed with a return to normal traffic patterns by tomorrow at 3 p.m., weather permitting.
  • GAS PRICES: Florida's average gas prices took a bit of a tumble today, stated AAA. Florida's average gas prices today are at $3.40 per gallon, a one-cent decrease from the day before, according to AAA. View the cheapest gas prices in the Tampa Bay area.
