CITRUS COUNTY, Fla. — The low rumble of the engine as you glide out on the glass-like waters of Crystal River is a breathtaking sight to see.
What You Need To Know
- Explore Crystal River as you do a little crabbing
- You can book Capt. Ed McCormick's Florida Crabbing excursions
Even on days when the clouds cover the vibrant sunsets, it's a sight to behold for seasoned Capt. Ed McCormick, who has been out on these waters for years.
“The water has been super clear for it being July," McCormick said. "A lot of times in the summer, the afternoon storms can make the water kind of murky, but it's been exceptionally clean."
That bodes well for what McCormick has planned for this nighttime excursion, where he takes beginners and experienced fishermen out in search of Florida blue crab.
In nearly pitch-black conditions, McCormick shows the ins and outs of night crab fishing. Using a net and high-powered lights, he scours the waters in search of blue crabs and any other interesting wildlife encountered — from fish to stingrays and alligators.
McCormick, a local to Florida all his life, knows the waters like the back of his hand. He's even had the opportunity to host world travelers and travel shows.
But his main goal has always remained the same, not just to provide an adventure but to also educate and promote conservation.
“In Florida, we don't have a size limit on crabs and you can take males or females. But on a good night, you can usually get a lot of crab so if you have more than enough, it's a good idea to put some of those big breeder females back," he said "... It really does help out with our crab population and conservation efforts.”
So come spend the night with McCormick as your guide, an experienced Florida fisherman with a knack for finding the best that Crystal River has to offer.
McCormick offers night crab fishing charters as well as a host of other fishing activities. To book your next adventure, you can head to their website.
