AUSTIN, Texas -- Efforts to change the name of campuses across the Austin Independent School District continue.
• AISD trustees canceled Monday night meeting and pushed it back one week
• Activists want Lanier High School changed to Juan Navarro High School
• Navarro was killed in Afghanistan back in 2012
Most of the campuses in question were named after military members who served during the Confederate War. A group of alumni wants to name one of those campuses after Sgt. Juan Navarro who was killed in Afghanistan back in 2012.
Activists were prepared to present the name they landed on for Lanier High School, but the trustee meeting was pushed back one week. They are calling on trustees to change the name from Lanier High School to Juan Navarro High School. At last count nearly 800 people have signed the petition.
"Once people in the neighborhood started getting involved and realized the school will get renamed. Let's change the name ourselves instead of having the school board decide on someone who may not have ties to the community,” said Manuel Muñoz, with Austin LULAC.
The rescheduled trustee meeting will take place next Monday, April 30, at 7 p.m.
