At a Tuesday afternoon news conference, questions were raised about why the "stand your ground" law resulted in Michael Drejka not being arrested.
“This type of stuff has been going on for way too long,” said Michael McGlockton, father of shooting victim Markeis McGlockton. “Any kind of law that allows one man to kill another man and the man that pull the trigger don’t even get fingerprinted? This needs to stop and something needs to be done.”
Also present at the press conference were McGlockton’s mother, his girlfriend Britany Jacobs and recently hired family attorney Michele Rayner.
McGlockton, 28, was shot to death by Drejka, 47, outside of the Circle A Convenience Store in Clearwater on July 19. Jacobs says Drekja yelled at her after she parked in a handicapped spot.
McGlockton pushed Drejka to the ground and that’s when Drejka opened fire, killing McGlockton.
“This man came to me,” Jacobs said. “This man was armed! He could’ve killed my whole family.”
Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri did not arrest Drejka following the shooting, citing that the shooting fell within the definition of the state's “stand your ground” . Rayner disagrees.
“There was no imminent danger that Mr. Drejka was going to die” Rayner said. “There’s no weapon that was brandished. Mr. McGlockton was not armed.”
McGlockton’s family wants the sheriff to take another look at the case.
"We're asking the Sheriff's Office to continue this investigation," Raynor said. "We're hopeful the office of (State Attorney) Bernie McCabe will file chargers against Mr. Drejka. If not, they’re sanctioning a murder."
McGlockton’s funeral is Saturday.
