Jacob, 10, and his father Kevin have been making American flags out of woodwork in their Lakeland garage since last year.

Jacob said the idea is to make as many as possible and give them to police officers, firefighters and first responders. So far, the father and son have handed out 51 of the flags, including one to

"Well, we made one for ourselves and we had left over wood," Jacob said. "So we made one and gave it to a police officer that lived in the cul-de-sac."

The original one is red, white and blue with the blue line in the middle for courage and the honor that they do every day, according to Kevin.

The father-son also made a black flag with a blue stripe remembering the fallen officers.

Kevin and Jacob said it is important to remember the people that help keep us safe.

"They're heroes," Jacob said. "They're out there doing it. They put their lives on the line every day. So we're just trying to thank them for it."
